Why a Heat Pump

Efficient heating and hot water all year round

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air — even on a cold Glasgow morning — and delivers around three times more heat energy than the electricity it uses. That efficiency is what cuts both running costs and carbon emissions, particularly in a well-insulated home.

Heat pumps are the best replacement for oil, LPG and direct electric heating, and a strong option when a gas boiler reaches the end of its life. Paired with solar panels and a battery, a large share of your heating can run on power you generated yourself.

  • Air source heat pumps with a SCOP of 2.5 to 4
  • Hot water cylinder integration and smart thermostat controls
  • Designed from a room-by-room heat loss survey, not a rule of thumb
  • Installed by our own MCS- and Gas Safe-certified engineers

Is my home suitable?

Insulation first

Heat pumps run at lower temperatures than a gas boiler, so loft and wall insulation make the biggest difference to comfort and running costs. We advise on this at the survey.

Radiators & cylinder

Some radiators may need upsizing and most homes need a hot water cylinder. The heat loss survey tells you exactly what changes, room by room, before you commit.

Outdoor space

The outdoor unit needs a wall or ground position with airflow around it. Modern units run at around the noise level of a fridge, and permitted development rules apply in most cases.

Your current heating

Heat pumps are the strongest replacement for oil, LPG and electric heating. Replacing a gas boiler works well too — our Gas Safe engineers decommission it safely.

Costs & Funding

What a heat pump costs in Glasgow — before and after funding

Typical ranges for the systems we install. Your fixed-price quote follows the heat loss survey, and the grant is paid directly against the installation.

Air source heat pump, installed

£10,000 – £15,000

A fully designed system for a typical three- or four-bedroom home: the outdoor unit, hot water cylinder, controls, any radiator changes, commissioning and MCS registration. Ground source systems cost more and need suitable land.

After the grant

£2,500 – £7,500

The Home Energy Scotland grant pays up to £7,500 directly towards the installation (£9,000 in rural and island areas) with no benefits test for owner-occupiers, and an optional interest-free loan is available on top.

Warm Homes Loans

Up to £20,000 at 0%–low interest

The new UK-wide scheme lends up to £20,000 for an air-to-water heat pump and £35,000 for ground source, and it can be combined with the grant above. Finance through Phoenix Finance is also available.

About Warm Homes Loans

The Process

From heat loss survey to handover

01

Heat loss survey

A room-by-room survey of your home's fabric, radiators and hot water needs — the foundation of a system that performs.

02

System design & quote

Correctly sized heat pump, cylinder and any radiator changes, with predicted running costs and an itemised fixed price.

03

Grant & funding

We supply the quote and documents Home Energy Scotland and Warm Homes Loan lenders need, and sequence the application for you.

04

Installation

Our MCS- and Gas Safe-certified team installs over two to five days, keeping heating disruption to a minimum.

05

Commissioning & MCS

The system is balanced, tested and registered with MCS; your certificate releases grant and loan payments.

06

Handover & aftercare

We set up the controls with you, explain the settings that matter, and provide annual servicing and support.

Warranties & Accreditation

Installed to the standard the grants require

Heat pump manufacturers typically offer five- to seven-year warranties, extendable with annual servicing, which we provide. MCS certification is a condition of both the Home Energy Scotland grant and Warm Homes Loans, and our TrustMark and RECC membership protects your contract and deposit. Gas Safe registration means a boiler replacement is decommissioned properly, not just disconnected.

Common Questions

Heat pump questions we're asked most

Do air source heat pumps work in Scottish winters?

Yes. The units we install operate down to -20°C and are designed for northern European climates. Performance is highest in a well-insulated home with correctly sized radiators, which is why every installation starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey.

Will I need new radiators?

Sometimes. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than a gas boiler, so some radiators may need upsizing to deliver the same warmth. The heat loss survey tells us exactly which rooms, if any, are affected before you commit.

How long does installation take?

A typical domestic air source heat pump installation takes two to five days, depending on whether a hot water cylinder is being added and how many radiators are changed. We commission the system, register it with MCS and walk you through the controls on handover.

What funding is available?

The Home Energy Scotland grant offers up to £7,500 towards a heat pump (£9,000 in rural and island areas), and the new Warm Homes Loan Scheme provides 0% and low-interest loans of up to £20,000 for an air-to-water heat pump. The two can be combined. Finance through Phoenix Finance is also available.
