What we see on surveys here
New Town, Old Town and the World Heritage Site
Georgian and Victorian stone buildings, mostly listed, where solar needs listed building consent and the council's guidance on positioning. Rear-facing and flat-roof installs are the usual answer; heat pumps are possible where an outdoor unit can be sited discreetly.
Tenements and colonies
As in Glasgow, tenement roofs are common property, so an install needs the other owners' agreement. Edinburgh's colony houses, with their private roof sections, are often simpler.
Suburban and commuter-belt housing
Corstorphine, Blackhall, Currie and Balerno, and the Lothian towns of Livingston, Dalkeith, Haddington and Linlithgow have large numbers of 1930s–1990s houses with straightforward pitched roofs — the bulk of our Lothians work.
Heating in Edinburgh
Edinburgh and the towns are on mains gas, but East Lothian villages, the Pentland fringe and parts of Midlothian are off-gas with oil or LPG — where an air source heat pump delivers the biggest running-cost saving and the rural grant uplift can apply.
Planning permission
Edinburgh has around fifty conservation areas plus the World Heritage Site, so planning is the first question we answer. Outside conservation areas, houses install under permitted development. Inside them, panels visible from the street need planning permission; listed buildings need listed building consent. We prepare and submit the applications, and design around the council's guidance on acceptable positions.

Common Questions
Questions from Edinburgh homeowners
Can I install solar in an Edinburgh conservation area?
Often, yes. Panels on roof slopes not visible from the road, on flat roofs or on rear extensions are regularly approved; street-facing slopes need planning permission and a sensitive design. Listed buildings need listed building consent. We handle the application.
Do you cover East, Mid and West Lothian?
Yes — Musselburgh, Haddington, Dunbar, North Berwick, Dalkeith, Penicuik, Livingston, Bathgate and Linlithgow are all on our regular Lothians run.
Does the rural grant uplift apply anywhere near Edinburgh?
Parts of East Lothian, Midlothian and the Pentland fringe are classed as accessible rural and off-gas, which can lift the Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant from £7,500 to £9,000. We check your exact postcode.
