Rural & Island Scotland
Heat pumps & solar for rural and island homes across Scotland
A large part of Scotland is off the gas grid, heating with oil, LPG or electric storage heaters at some of the highest running costs in the UK. Those are exactly the homes where an air source heat pump and solar make the biggest difference — and where the Home Energy Scotland grant rises to £9,000. We install across the Highlands, Argyll & Bute, the Scottish Borders, Dumfries & Galloway and the islands, scheduling surveys and installations in grouped visits.

What we see on surveys here
Oil and LPG homes
Stone cottages, farmhouses and 20th-century bungalows heated by oil or LPG, usually with a tank in the garden. A correctly sized air source heat pump replaces the boiler and the tank, and typically cuts running costs.
Electric storage heating
Common on the islands and in remote glens. A heat pump delivers around three units of heat per unit of electricity against one for storage heaters — the largest saving of any switch we make.
Exposed and coastal sites
We specify marine-grade outdoor units and fixings for coastal and island addresses, and position units out of the prevailing wind. Solar still performs well: panels generate from daylight, and long summer days offset the winter.
Heating in Rural & Islands
Mains gas is rare outside the towns. Oil, LPG, electric storage and solid fuel are the norm, which is why heat pumps, not solar, are usually the first conversation — though a battery and solar array pairs well with a heat pump on a time-of-use tariff.
Planning permission
National Parks (Cairngorms, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs), National Scenic Areas and conservation villages have their own planning handling, and many island authorities have specific guidance. Most houses still install under permitted development; where an application is needed we prepare it. Ferry and access logistics are planned into the quote, never added afterwards.

Common Questions
Questions from Rural & Islands homeowners
Will travel add to my price?
No. We group rural and island surveys and installations by area and build the logistics — including ferries — into the fixed quote. The price we confirm in writing is the price you pay.
Do heat pumps work in Highland winters?
Yes. The units we install are rated to -20°C and are standard across Scandinavia. The key is correct sizing from a room-by-room heat loss survey and getting the insulation right first, which we advise on.
Which grant applies to island addresses?
The Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant with the island uplift — £9,000 rather than £7,500 — plus an optional interest-free loan, and the Warm Homes Loan can cover the balance. Warmer Homes Scotland fully funds eligible households.
