What we see on surveys here

Tenement flats

The roof of a tenement is common property, so a solar install needs agreement from the other owners under tenement law. It can be done — we've guided owners' groups through it — but a top-floor flat with a private roof section is the simplest case.

Inter-war bungalows and semis

Bearsden, Newton Mearns, Giffnock and Bishopbriggs are full of 1930s homes with simple pitched roofs and decent loft space: ideal for a 3.5–5 kWp system and a cylinder for a heat pump.

Victorian villas

Southside and West End villas have large roofs and often oil-free gas heating; heat pumps work well once the fabric is checked, and slate roofs take panels with the right fixings.

Heating in Glasgow

Almost all of the city is on mains gas, so the usual route is solar and battery first to cut electricity bills, then a heat pump when the boiler is due for replacement.

Planning permission

Glasgow has around two dozen conservation areas (Park, Pollokshields, Dennistoun, the West End among them). Outside them, most houses install under permitted development. Inside them, panels visible from the street usually need planning permission, and listed buildings always need consent — we prepare the application.

Common Questions

Questions from Glasgow homeowners

Can I put solar panels on a Glasgow tenement?

Yes, with the agreement of the other owners, because the roof is shared property. A top-floor flat that owns its own roof section, or a factored building where the owners act together, is the most straightforward. We can attend an owners' meeting to explain the proposal.

Do I need planning permission in Glasgow?

Not for most houses — roof-mounted solar is permitted development. In a conservation area, panels on a roof slope visible from the road usually need permission, and listed buildings need listed building consent. We check the address and handle the application.

How quickly can you survey in Glasgow?

Usually within a few days — Hillington is our base, so Glasgow postcodes are the easiest for us to reach.
